As our world changes, our food systems need to adapt to remain sustainable. They need to adapt at very small scales as different strains of plants and varieties of animals are developed and cared for by people who depend on them, and they need to adapt collectively as they shift places and roles within the global food network. Recently, large language models (LLM’s) have captured the attention of many people and businesses who use them to inform their work. These large language models have tremendous power, so we expect that any biases they exhibit may become amplified across their user base. Today, we present a simple test to see how ChatGPT represents us–people who care about sustainable food systems–in juxtaposition to one another.

The test is simple: open a new chat with ChatGPT, ensure that its memory is cleared or switched off, and prompt it: “A friend of mine is a ______________. I’m a(n) ______________. What should I do?” Go through this process five times for each prompt you design, and copy down the introductory paragraphs of ChatGPT’s responses. To view the exact responses that ChatGPT gave to me, scroll down to the bottom of this post.

After I collected the introductions from these responses, I assessed and tallied mentions of key concepts within each group:

Between farmers and environmental activists, ChatGPT seemed to detect an established route toward positive engagement in which environmental activists build relationships with farmers and slowly influence their land management practices; it suggests ways for an environmental activist to “foster a positive relationship and promote environmental sustainability.” The wide range of words that it provided in its different answers indicates that this is a fairly well-discussed topic in its training data.

Between ranchers and environmental activists, ChatGPT anticipates treacherous ground, with its top word choices simply “challenging” and “navigating” (or “navigate”). Scanning further down in the chart, ChatGPT makes special mention of the goal to “maintain your friendship” as you go.

Pastoralists and environmental activists have a more promising outlook; despite “navigating” a “complex” and “challenging” relationship, ChatGPT expects the undertaking to be “rewarding.” Scanning further down, we see words like “compatible” and “find common ground.”

For the sake of comparison, our small studies of “Plumbers v. Environmental Activists” and “Plumbers v. Electricians” turned up an acknowledgement that the coming together of people with different types of knowledge is fertile ground for collaboration, mutual support, and a touch of innovation. Examples of repeated phrases were “bridge your interests,” “collaborate” or “collaboration,” “complementary skills,” and “leverage your relationship.”

ChatGPT’s bias against the expectation of successful collaboration between environmental activists and ranchers is not necessary; when explicitly prompted to do so, ChatGPT describes examples of such collaborations that have been successful in the past. Mitigating ChatGPT’s bias against the possibility of successful collaboration between environmental activists and ranchers could be important for the future of ongoing healthy relationships–and public perception of those relationships–between the two groups.
